Specialty Classes and Workshops

While we don't do specialty workshops, many local art centers do. We think our students and members would be interested. If you know of a special pottery workshop happening in the Twin Cites, please email us the details so we can add it here.

Low Momentum: Hand-building and Throwing on a Light-weight Kick Wheel

Learn about wood firing and how to make large clay pots from Samuel Johnson, clay artist and Associate Art Professor at St. John’s/St. Benedict’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Sam will demonstrate his unique technique of coil-and-paddle construction with clay while working on a light weight, Japanese-style kick wheel. Sam’s technical mastery and understanding of pottery is well developed and his work frequently reflects his ongoing investigations of the philosophy and history of clay. Come join in the discussion and learn from a highly skilled potter! Box lunches will be available for $10 or bring your own.

When: April 22
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Geometric Assemblages and Surfaces with Brady McLearen

This workshop is perfect for beginner and experienced students alike! Brady will demonstrate assembly techniques using various studio equipment including the slab roller, potter’s wheel, and extruder. On Friday night, students will create and prepare multiple parts to combine into unique three-dimensional geometric forms.  Saturday’s discussions and demonstrations will focus on appropriate materials preparation, engineering and assembly of unique forms, loading and firing techniques for unusual shapes and sculptures, and various resist glazing techniques. Projects will be glazed using wax and tape resists to achieve crisp and controlled lines. Some previous clay experience is helpful (but not necessary). Earthenware clay and 04 glazes will be used in the demonstrations, but stoneware and cone 6-10 works well for these processes too!  All levels of experience welcome.

When: Thursdays, June 29 - July 13
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (3 sessions)

Cost: $81 nm/$74 m
